Portraits

When I was a child I thought a Portrait was a big 'oil painting' of a mature person in in a chair in rather grande surroundings !

So lets clarify what Portraits really are, a representation that captures something of a person or persons that is familiar to others evoking an emotional response in them, who know the subject much better than the photographer does. That is why Portrait Photography is so skillful, anyone can use a camera, making portraits is something entirely different !

I've seen great Portraits where you don't even see the face of the person, but know immediately who they are. Think of an image you know of a Pop/Rock star for example.

To me Portraits / Family photographs are generally shot in natural light, though of course here in the UK sometimes there is no choice but to use artificial light, especially in the often rainy wintertime.
A portrait is definately not just a head and shoulders image of an individual or couple. It could be a full length image of a group of work colleagues in situ (an environmental Portrait), a large family gathering for a birthday party (observational portraits/group portraits) or a man or woman who wants something to surprise their loved one with(bouidoir portraits, the newest trend) these are all portraits.

Children nearly always respond much better splashing about at the edge of the beach or messing around in woodlands than they do when introduced to an artificial studio environment, and I've photographed many happy families here using my local beach, gardens and pretty country hotels.

Remember when asking for your children to be photographed you are investing in the future and should be included too, so they can remember what you looked too in years to come-

Because of the huge range of customers that I photograph, it's very difficult to have a pre arranged Portrait Pricelist, though I do have a Portrait/Family Pricelist which covers Family type sessions/ occasions for a lot of customers, with families often spread out it's quite common to hire a photographer when the family are all together in one place at a special time, and have family portraits.

For couple's not married but who have been together for a while, a couple Portrait Shoot can be a great way to have some professional images to display in your home/homes, and take off a bit of pressure if your families and friends are asking are you aren't you ?? !!
